These ants are a welcome addition to any picnic.

Prep Time: 15 min (not including thaw time)
Bake Time: 15-20 min
Servings: 1 or 2
Skills: Beginning

  1. 2 Rhodes Yeast Dinner Rolls, thawed
    1 egg, beaten
    1 raisin
    8 pieces red string licorice

    Pan size; cookie sheet
    Temperature; 350° F
Baking time; 15 to 20 minutes

Thaw rolls until soft (about 30-40 minutes). Cut one dinner roll in two. Form two balls. Cut another dinner roll into thirds. Use 1/3 of it for the head. Save the other 2/3 for additional ants, if preferred. On a sprayed cookie sheet, arrange balls next to each other. Cut smaller ball open for mouth with scissors. Prop open with a small ball of foil. Cut raisin in half. Attach raisin eyes with egg wash. Brush ant with beaten egg. Cover with sprayed plastic wrap. Let rise 30 minutes. Remove wrap. Bake at 350° F for 15 to 20 minutes. When cooled, place 6 pieces of red string licorice in middle section for legs. Cut 2 curls of red licorice (about 2 1/2") and stick in head for antennae. Remove foil from mouth.
