Lunes Latino: Super Churros

Be still my heart! Churros stuffed with Nutella? If you thought Mely's churros last time were incredible, you've got to try these. With the warm chocolate spread oozing from each bite, ...

Ingredients:

  • Rhodes Dinner Rolls, Thawed but still cold
  • 4 Cups Canola Oil
  • 1 Cup Sugar
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon in powder
  • 1 jar Chocolate Spread like Nutella

Background:

I have shared with you how to make Churros using Rhodes Dinner Rolls. Now, I want you to take this recipe one further, how to stuff your churros with yummy chocolate spread just like the street vendors will do in Mexico. Although the stuffing can vary, this is a great taste that will make your family come back for more.

Directions:

With your hands, spread each roll out so that it is flat and rectangular. It is okay to use a little flour so it doesn't stick to your fingers. Just make sure the dough is not too thin in any one place.

Now take your chocolate spread and add a line of it down the center of the roll. Do not add too much or then again, too little.

Now pinch together two ends at the top.

Go ahead and close the entire churro. Make sure it closes very well. Pinch the edges to seal.

Place sprayed plastic wrap on the counter and place each rolled Churro. You can let it sit and double in size or fry it now. I let it sit and double in size which gave me a much fluffier Churro.

Heat the oil in a deep skillet to 350 degrees F.  I usually take a piece of bread and add to the oil to make sure it fries rapidly.

Place each Churro in the oil with the closed side up. This is very important because it will open and all of your chocolate will come out if you place the closed side down. You must also fry the non-closed side completely before you flip it over to ensure the contents do not fall out. Fry until dark golden brown.

Remove from oil and drain on paper towels.

Combine Sugar and cinnamon in a one gallon resealable plastic bag and shake until well combined.

Place warm churros, one at a time, in bag and shake until well coated.

Now your Super Churros are done… ENJOY!

Grade:

My nephew Martin Corona graded these Super Churros and absolutely loved them. He gave them a 9 out of 10. I had them done in time for our weekly family dinner and even my Uncle who is known for eating very little and cautiously sneaked a few when he thought no one was looking.
