My son and his girl friend came to Sunday dinner. I wanted to impress her with my
culinary skills, so I switched up our regular Sunday meal by making Cream Cheese
Onion Swirl Rolls.

Cream Cheese Onion Swirls

12 Rhodes™ Dinner Rolls, thawed to room temperature
8 ounces Cream Cheese, softened
1 cup French fried onions
1 cup shredded parmesan cheese
¼ cup butter, softened
1 tablespoon poppy seeds
1 tablespoon dried parsley
1 ½ teaspoons garlic powder

Notice the new packaging of French Fried Onions…I passed them several times on my shopping trip. I was looking for the old round can!

Combine rolls and roll out on sprayed counter top into a 12x16 inch rectangle. Cover with plastic. If the dough springs back while you’re rolling it out, cover with plastic and let rest 10 minutes.

Combine and mix the rest of the ingredients. Spread the mixture over the dough, spreading the filling out to the edges except on one side. Leave about 1 inch along the side without spread on it. Make sure you leave the long side without spread; otherwise it makes it difficult to get 12 rolls out of thedough.

Start rolling up the dough from the long side with filling out to the edge. Brush the clean inch with water and finish the roll. Pinch to seal. The filling is pretty thick so not much escaped while rolling.

Cut the rolled dough crosswise into 12 pieces and lay the swirls on a sprayed baking sheet about an inch apart. Cover with sprayed plastic wrap and let rise until double in size. I was doing quite a bit in the kitchen so it was pretty warm. The rolls didn’t take long to rise. I also have a trick…when I have my oven on anyway, I set my pan of rolls on the stove burner that vents the oven and they rise even quicker.

Remove wrap and bake at 350 F 15-18 minutes or until golden brown. I like my rolls on the lighterside so I baked them for exactly 15 minutes. Adjust the time to how dark you like your rolls.

This was a fun way to ‘dress up’ our usual Sunday meal. The family loved them and my son’s girlfriend thinks I’m pretty fabulous…(well maybe not FABULOUS). Needless to say there were no leftovers for my husband’s lunch on Monday!

Ingredients

12 Rhodes Yeast Dinner Rolls, thawed to room temperature
8 ounces cream cheese, softened
1 cup French fried onions
1 cup shredded parmesan cheese
1/4 cup butter, softened
1 tablespoon poppy seeds
1 tablespoon dried parsley
1 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder

Instructions

Spray counter lightly with non-stick cooking spray.

Combine rolls and roll into a 12x16-inch rectangle. Cover with plastic wrap and let rest.

Combine the remaining ingredients and mix well. Remove wrap from dough and spread evenly with the mixture, leaving about 1-inch along one long side uncovered.

Start rolling up the dough from the long side with filling. Brush the uncovered long edge with water and continue rolling. The moistened edge will help the dough seal.

Cut into 12 equal pieces and place on a sprayed baking sheet. Cover with sprayed plastic wrap and let rise until double in size.

Remove wrap and bake at 350°F 15-20 minutes or until nicely browned.
