Heart Shaped Calzones
February is the month where we celebrate the holiday of romance and love. And I know the perfect thing to show your loved ones how much you care. Make up a batch of Heart Shaped Calzones. Here’s how.
Heart Shaped Calzones
2 Rhodes™ Dinner Rolls, thawed to room temperature
desired fillings such as:
cubed ham or turkey
chopped green pepper
pizza sauce for dipping
(The toppings I chose were pepperoni, black olives, ham, pineapple, chicken, and mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.)
(I took lots of photos. I thought that it would help to see a visual of how the process of shaping the dough into hearts. I know it helped me.)
On a countertop lightly sprayed with non-stick cooking spray, press two dinner rolls into teardrop shapes. (Only one shown in photo.)
Cut 1 inch down into the middle of the wide part to form the deep cut in the heart.
Barely turn under the pointed edges of your cut then press with fingers to form two hearts that are the same size, about 5x4 inches.
Moisten the edge of one of the hearts with water to help it seal.
Put filling on the heart with the moistened edge, about 1 or 2 tablespoons of each of 3 or 4 fillings.
Carefully pick up the second heart and put over the fillings on the first heart making sure the side of the dough that was on the sprayed counter top is facing up. Press the edges firmly with fingertips to seal all the way around. (Keep going around and around the heart until the edge seals tight. Once you press the edges around the heart once, carefully pick it up and then press the edges several more times while turning it in your hand. This might be easier than pressing to seal the edges while on the counter.)
Carefully lift the filled heart and place on sprayed baking sheet. Finish shaping heart to desired size and shape. Aren’t they cute?
Bake at 350º for 15 minutes. Serve with your pizza sauce for dipping. (I chose pizza sauce for my pepperoni and black olive and ham and pineapple calzones. And Alfredo sauce for my chicken and parmesan cheese Calzone. Mmm!)
